The Renegade Rotary:

The John Player Special Nortons, powered by their 588 cc Wankel Rotary engines, are among the most iconic machines to tackle the Mountain Course. At the heart of the bike, the rotor spun at high speed, upto 9500 RPM, delivering power in a way no conventional piston engine could, and engineer Brian Crighton’s expertise made it reliable enough for the TT.

The Rotary Nortons enjoyed success in the 1990s, with Robert Dunlop taking multiple podiums, but it was Ian “Hizzy”Hislop who made history at the 1992 Senior TT. Battling Carl Fogarty, Hislop kept the tricky, rotor-driven Norton on line to take victory in one of the most celebrated races in TT history, a triumph of both engineering and riding skill.
