Evel Knievel is from the 2022 Milestones collection which, unlike the rest of the series was shot not on the Isle of Man TT course but across dozens of locations of historical significance to the TT. In this collection, riders, manufacturers and engineers all play a part in a plot culminating on that sacred stretch of 37 and three quarter miles of road: the Isle of Man TT course. These images offer a glimpse into the story behind the story.

The story:

John McGuinness MBE - 23 times-TT winner - started his motorcycle ‘career’ at the age of three, after his father bought him an Italjet with stabilisers on. In addition to this, he made John ‘little jumps’ to ride over. Naturally, a child of the 70s, McGuinness said: ‘I thought I was Evel Knievel,’ as the confessed in That Near Death Thing by Rick Broadbent. Such was McGuinness’ dedication to Evel’s stunts that the Daily Mirror featured a story on the young John in 1973. McGuinness - at the bequest of his father - obtained a proper ‘trade’ as a bricklayer but never liked it. Then in 1996 - while working as a bricklayer - he decided to do the North West and, while at the Irish road race made the decision to do the TT that year. “I can remember I was sitting in front of your dad at the start line on a Honda RS 250 and thinking ‘this is it’.
