Ben Drinkwater’s Workshop is from the 2022 Milestones collection which, unlike the rest of the series was shot not on the Isle of Man TT course but across dozens of locations of historical significance to the TT. In this collection, riders, manufacturers and engineers all play a part in a plot culminating on that sacred stretch of 37 and three quarter miles of road: the Isle of Man TT course. These images offer a glimpse into the story behind the story.

The story:

Ben Drinkwater’s workshops took many unconventional forms. The Lancashire-born rider would prepare his race machines throughout the late 1940s in a mezzanine above a silage store. But despite the rudimentary working environment, Drinkwater was a successful rider, finishing third in the 1947 Lightweight TT. During the 1949 350cc Junior TT, however, Drinkwater crashed and was killed. The bend - at the 11th Milestone - was named after him. Ben Drinkwater had a motorcycle dealership in Rochdale, which my grandfather purchased off Drinkwater’s widow following his death.
